The Hungarian Defence arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Be7 (ECO C50). Instead of the active 3...Bc5, Black puts the bishop modestly on e7, choosing solidity over sharpness.
The idea is to avoid the sharp lines of the Italian and the Two Knights and take a firm if slightly passive position. Black finishes development quietly and undermines the centre with ...d5 when the chance comes.
The Hungarian is a reliable choice for anyone who wants to sidestep forcing play with Black and dislikes exposing f7 to an early attack.
