The Giuoco Piano (the «quiet game») arises in the Italian after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 (ECO C50). Both sides develop bishops and knights symmetrically, aiming at f7 and f2.
The modern treatment is the «Giuoco Pianissimo» with d3, c3 and slow preparation of d4: White is in no hurry to open the centre and builds up and manoeuvres instead. A rich positional struggle grows out of the quiet start.
In recent years the Giuoco Piano has come back into fashion at the very top as a way to get a meaty game without forcing theory. An excellent opening for learning healthy strategy.
