The Hungarian Opening begins 1.g3 (ECO A00). White prepares to fianchetto the king's bishop on g2, aimed along the long diagonal and at the centre, while keeping the choice of further set-up as open as possible.
The opening almost always transposes into other systems - the English, the Reti, the Catalan or the King's Indian Attack - depending on Black's replies. A chameleon of an opening for universal players.
It is sometimes called the Benko Opening. A quiet, low-theory route for White that backs an understanding of structure rather than forcing lines.
