The Halloween Gambit arises in the Four Knights Game after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nxe5 (ECO C47). White sacrifices a knight in order to drive Black's pieces back with the pawns d4 and e5 and seize an enormous pawn centre.
For the piece White gets a powerful centre and space, chasing the f6 knight with the e5 pawn. The idea is risky: with accurate defence Black is a piece up, but in practice the pawn advance can be very unpleasant.
A rare, adventurous gambit with a scary name - a weapon for bold players who like unconventional attacking chess, especially at fast time controls.
Set it up on the board, move the pieces around and copy the FEN - or open the full walkthrough of the opening in a separate article.
Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
The pieces will be arranged into the chosen pattern.
