The Petrosian System arises in the Grunfeld after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bg5 (ECO D91). The bishop comes to g5, pinning the knight on f6 and putting pressure on the d5 pawn.
The idea is to use the pin to make Black's standard breaks awkward and settle the question of the centre in peace. Black answers with ...Ne4 or ...c5, breaking the pin and starting counterplay.
The system is associated with Tigran Petrosian. A subtle positional route against the Grunfeld, where understanding matters more than memorised forcing lines.
