The Exchange Variation arises in the Grunfeld after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 (ECO D85). White trades pawns and builds a powerful e4-d4 pawn centre.
This is the central argument of the Grunfeld: White rests on the big centre and the space, while Black sets out to show it is an object of attack instead - leaning on it with the g7 bishop, with ...c5 and with pieces down the files.
The Exchange is the most principled way to meet the Grunfeld. Kasparov and Carlsen both explored it in depth; it is a sharp, theory-heavy line.
