The Winawer arises after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 (ECO C15). Black pins the knight on c3 with the bishop and usually trades it off, doubling White's pawns on the c-file.
A sharp, asymmetrical fight follows: White has the two bishops, a strong centre and attacking chances on the kingside, Black a solid structure and play against the doubled pawns and the weaknesses.
The Winawer is the most principled and sharpest system of the French. Botvinnik and Korchnoi both loved it; it leads to complicated positions with chances for both sides.
