The Tarrasch Variation arises after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 (ECO C03). The knight goes to d2 rather than c3, to avoid the pin by the bishop on b4 (as in the Winawer) and keep a flexible, solid structure.
In reply Black chooses between 3...c5 (with a possible isolated pawn and active play) and 3...Nf6 (with a closed pawn chain). White keeps a small but durable edge and comprehensible plans.
The Tarrasch is a reliable, low-risk weapon against the French; Karpov and Kasparov both used it readily with White.
