The Rubinstein Variation arises when Black takes on e4 in the French: for example 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 (ECO C10). Black releases the central tension at once, conceding a space advantage to White.
In exchange Black gets a solid if slightly passive position with no weaknesses, and solves the main problem of the French by getting the light-squared bishop out. The plan is careful development and the ...c5 or ...e5 breaks.
