The Exchange Variation arises after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 (ECO C01). White trades the central pawns, and a completely symmetrical pawn structure appears with an open e-file.
It has a drawish reputation, but that is deceptive: with active pieces and an accurate set-up either side can play for a win, using the initiative and control of the open file. It is piece activity, not the structure, that decides.
The Exchange is often chosen when a quiet game against the French is wanted, but in the hands of a strong positional player it can also be a weapon for a win.
