The Classical Variation arises after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 (ECO C11). Unlike the Winawer, Black develops the knight to f6 and hits the centre by natural means; White replies 4.Bg5 or 4.e5.
It is a dense fight for the centre: after e5 the knight on f6 is pushed back, and the typical French structures appear, with a pawn chain and Black's counterplay against d4. There are sharp sacrificial lines too (the Chatard-Alekhine Attack).
The Classical system is one of the most principled treatments of the French, with a wide choice of plans for both sides.
