The Spanish Variation arises in the Four Knights after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5 (ECO C48). White develops the bishop to b5 in Spanish style, attacking the c6 knight and keeping the symmetry.
From there the fight is about breaking the balance: Rubinstein's defence (4...Nd4!?) with its tactical subtleties is well known. White rests on a slightly more active set-up, Black aims to equalise with exchanges and accurate play.
