The Scotch Variation arises in the Four Knights after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.d4 (ECO C47). White opens the centre with d4, turning the symmetrical position into an open fight.
After 4...exd4 5.Nxd4 lively positions appear with quick development and exchanges in the centre. Black usually equalises with accurate play (5...Bb4 or 5...Nxd4), but the struggle stays meaty.
An active way to enliven the Four Knights: instead of slow play White opens the position at once, as in the Scotch Game.
Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
The pieces will be arranged into the chosen pattern.
It is the mating side to move. Find mate in one.
