The Falkbeer Countergambit arises after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5 (ECO C31). Instead of accepting the gambit, Black strikes back in the centre, opening the position and going for a quick initiative.
The idea is to exploit the weakening White has made with f4: after 3.exd5 e4 the black pawn on e4 cramps White while Black leads in development. The play turns sharp and tactical.
