Evans Gambit

The Evans Gambit arises in the Italian Game after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.b4 (ECO C51). White sacrifices the b4 pawn in order to build a strong centre with c3 and d4 with tempo (by attacking the bishop) and unfold an attack quickly.

For the pawn White gets a powerful pawn centre, a lead in development and open lines for an attack on f7 and the king. If Black plays greedily, the sweep is swift.

The Evans is a shining example of the romantic school of the nineteenth century; Anderssen and Morphy handled it brilliantly, and Kasparov revived it in our own time. A sharp weapon for attacking players.

Set it up on the board, move the pieces around and copy the FEN - or open the full walkthrough of the opening in a separate article.

Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
