English Opening: the Symmetrical Variation

The Symmetrical Variation arises after 1.c4 c5 (ECO A30). Both sides mirror each other in taking queenside space, and the fight is over who can break the symmetry first to their own advantage.

Rich strategic structures grow out of this variation - the Hedgehog (with pawns on a6, b6, d6 and e6) and the Maroczy Bind. The play is manoeuvring in character, where understanding the set-ups matters more than memorised moves.

The Symmetrical English appeals to positional all-rounders for its flexibility and depth. It leads to a long fight full of ideas.
