After 1.c4 e5 (ECO A20) the «Reversed Sicilian» appears: the position resembles a Sicilian Defence with colours reversed, where White plays Black's schemes but with an extra tempo.
That tempo gives White a pleasant, slightly more active version of familiar Sicilian structures. White usually fianchettoes the bishop on g2 and fights for the d5 square, while Black defends the centre and deploys the pieces.
The 1...e5 line is one of the most principled answers to the English. An understanding of Sicilian ideas works here in mirror image, and in White's favour.
