Dutch Defence: the Stonewall

The Stonewall is one of the main formations of the Dutch Defence: Black puts pawns on d5, e6 and f5 (ECO A92). That rigid structure holds the central squares fast and prepares an attack on the kingside.

The pluses are solidity and a clear attacking plan (...Ne4, ...Rf6-h6, and the g- and h-pawns advancing); the minus is the chronically weak e5 square and the passive light-squared bishop on c8, which has to be activated somehow (via ...b6 and ...Bb7, or ...Bd7-e8-h5).

The Stonewall is the choice of anyone who likes clear structures and playing for an attack on the king with Black. White can adopt the same set-up too (the Stonewall Attack).
