The Staunton Gambit arises after 1.d4 f5 2.e4 (ECO A83). White sacrifices the e4 pawn at once to open lines, develop quickly and punish Black for the weakening ...f5.
After 2...fxe4 3.Nc3 White presses on the e4 pawn and aims at an attack (Bg5, f3); for the pawn White gets a lead in development and the initiative. Black has to play accurately to keep the material and stay out of trouble.
The Staunton Gambit is an aggressive anti-Dutch plan for anyone who would rather not conduct a positional fight against ...f5 and prefers sharp tactical play from the start.
