The Exchange Variation arises after 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 (ECO B13). White releases the central tension at once, producing a symmetrical pawn structure.
The play is quiet and positional: White usually develops the bishop to d3 and works for a small edge, while Black finishes development easily, light-squared bishop included. From this variation White can also switch to the sharp Panov Attack with c4.
The Exchange is a reliable way to play against the Caro-Kann without much theory. Quiet but not toothless: if Black plays passively, White keeps up lasting pressure.
