The Advance Variation arises after 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 (ECO B12). White closes the centre and takes space just as in the French, but Black has one important difference.
The chief virtue of the Caro-Kann: before ...e6 is played the light-squared bishop gets out to an active square (...Bf5), so Black has no «bad» locked-in bishop as in the French. Black then undermines the centre with ...c5.
The Advance is one of the most popular ways to play against the Caro-Kann. It leads to a meaty fight: White's space and attack against Black's solid structure and active bishop.
