The Blackmar-Diemer arises after 1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3, with the idea of f3 and Bxf3 (ECO D00). White sacrifices a pawn to open lines, develop quickly and start an attack on the king.
For the pawn White gets a lead in development, the open f- and e-files and the initiative. If Black plays inaccurately the attack arrives fast; with careful defence Black keeps the extra pawn.
The gambit is not considered fully sound against accurate play, but it is extremely dangerous in practice and popular among attacking club players. An excellent fighting weapon at fast time controls.

Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
The pieces will be arranged into the chosen pattern.
