The Modern Variation arises in Alekhine's Defence after 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3 (ECO B04). White develops the knight rather than grabbing space at once with c4, staying flexible.
Black undermines the centre with ...d6 (and, when useful, ...Bg4 and ...c5), trying to prove White's pawns overextended. It is the most popular and, for White, the most reliable treatment of the fight against Alekhine's Defence.
The Modern Variation is a quiet, positional path against the audacious Alekhine: White does not bury itself in pawn advances but rests on a durable edge in space.
Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
The pieces will be arranged into the chosen pattern.
