20-Player Chess Tournament: 6 rounds and a live table

Alexey Mudry · updated August 25, 2026
Twenty players is already the scale of a school grade or a big class. Pairing by hand and computing coefficients for such a group is hard, so automation is especially valuable here. Let's cover how many rounds you need, how long it takes and how to keep order among twenty players.

How many rounds

For 17-32 players the standard is 6 Swiss rounds. With twenty players, five rounds is already a bit short (too many people on equal points), and six reliably reveals both the winner and the whole podium.

It's exactly at this size that doing it by hand gets truly hard: 20 people, 6 rounds means pairing ten pairs each round with the match history and colors in mind. The bot does it instantly and without errors.

Timing and the live table

On blitz 10+0 a round is about 20-25 minutes (10 games in parallel), six rounds about 2-2.5 hours. For a school competition day that fits a few lessons or one big block. You need 10 boards.

For a group of 20 the live table is especially useful: put it on a screen or board after each round. Kids follow their place, and the bot recomputes points and Buchholz automatically - nobody gets confused about who's where.

A ready plan for a school

A scenario: a grade or big class, 20 players, blitz 10+0, 6 rounds, certificates for the top places. The teacher creates the tournament in the bot Vibe Chess Bot, enters kids as guests by name (no phones needed), runs /start_tournament and /next_round between rounds. The teacher's detailed guide is in the tournament at school article.

Run a 20-player tournament without hand counting

Create a tournament in the bot, enter the players - and 6 rounds run themselves. Pairing and the live table are on the bot.

Frequently asked questions

How many rounds do I need for 20 players?

Six Swiss rounds. For a field of 17-32 that's standard: five is too few (many players on equal points), and six reliably decides the winner and the whole podium.

How long will the tournament take?

On blitz 10+0 about 2-2.5 hours (six rounds of 20-25 minutes). All games in a round run in parallel, so time depends on the control, not the number of people.

Is it realistic to run this by hand?

It's hard: 20 people and 6 rounds means pairing ten pairs each round with match history and colors, plus computing Buchholz for everyone. The bot does it instantly, so automation really pays off at this size.

How many boards do I need?

Ten - one per each of the 10 parallel games. With fewer, some players wait their turn and the tournament stretches.

How do I keep track of who's where?

Put the bot's live table on a screen or board after each round. Points and the Buchholz coefficient are recomputed automatically, so the standings are always current.

FreeThe tournament app

How to run a tournament without being an arbiter

No arbiter skills required. The app takes over the part that usually stops people from running tournaments at all: who plays whom in each round and who finishes first.

  1. 1Creating the event takes a minute
  2. 2Open registration and drop the link into the chat
  3. 3Pairings follow FIDE rules (Dutch system, the bbpPairings engine)
  4. 4Results go in with two taps and the table recalculates instantly
  • Swiss system. works for ten players and for fifty
  • Round robin. for a small group that wants to play everyone
  • Free meetup. for those who do not need a bracket at all

More than a bot: the app, FIDE rules and a TRF report

  • The app. Besides the bot there is an app - inside Telegram and simply at vibechess.ru/app: what is on in your city, the player list, a live table, the current round, your profile and game history - everything that is awkward to read as chat messages.
  • Pairings by FIDE rules. Pairings are computed by bbpPairings, an open-source engine implementing the Dutch system: score groups, floats on an odd field, colour alternation, no rematches and no two byes in a row.
  • A TRF report. A finished tournament exports as a single file in the FIDE data exchange format - the one arbiter software and federations accept. Your profile stores the FIDE ID, national federation code, title, sex and date of birth for it.
  • Free. All of the above, with no subscriptions, paid plans or limits on the number of tournaments and players.

Missing a feature? Message the developers

The bot is constantly improved based on real tournaments. If you need a feature that isn't there yet, message the developers right inside the bot with the /support command. Many features appeared exactly because organizers asked for them, and useful ideas get added quickly.
