12-Player Chess Tournament: 5 rounds in one evening

Alexey Mudry · updated August 25, 2026
Twelve players is already too many for a round-robin (that's 11 rounds, a whole day), so here the Swiss system is the clear choice. The good news: a full 12-player tournament takes just 5 rounds and fits one evening. Let's lay out the exact plan - for an office team or a group of friends.

How many rounds and why 5

For 12 players, 5 Swiss roundsis optimal. That's enough for the leaders to meet a few times and a single winner to emerge, with places on equal points settled by the Buchholz coefficient.

A round-robin (everyone plays everyone) for 12 isn't used - it's 11 rounds and a whole day of play. The Swiss gives the same excitement four times faster. More on picking the round count in the how many rounds in the Swiss article.

Timing for an evening

On blitz 5+0 a round takes 12-15 minutes with seating (6 games run in parallel). Five rounds is about 1.5 hours. Blitz 3+2 wraps it in an hour; rapid 10+5 stretches it to 2.5-3 hours for more thoughtful games. For 12 people you need 6 boards - one per pair.

A ready plan for an office or friends

A classic scenario: 12 coworkers, a Friday evening, blitz 5+0, 5 rounds, a prize for the winner. Create the tournament in the bot Vibe Chess Bot with /create_tournament, open /open_registration (people sign up themselves), /start_tournament and /next_round between rounds. The finished table comes after /finish_tournament. More on the office format in the office tournament article.

Run a 12-player tournament in one evening

Create a tournament in the bot, open registration - and over 5 rounds of blitz a winner is decided. The bot counts everything.

Frequently asked questions

How many rounds do I need for 12 players?

Five Swiss rounds. That's enough for the leaders to meet and a single winner to emerge, with equal points broken by the Buchholz coefficient.

Why not round-robin?

A round-robin for 12 is 11 rounds - a whole day of play. The Swiss gives the same result in 5 rounds, so for this size it's the one to use.

How long will the tournament take?

On blitz 5+0, about 1.5 hours (five rounds of 12-15 minutes). Blitz 3+2 - around an hour, rapid 10+5 - 2.5-3 hours, depending on how thoughtful you want the games.

How many boards do I need?

Six - one per each of the 6 parallel games. With fewer, play in turns, but the tournament takes longer.

What if 11 or 13 show up?

No problem: on an odd count the bot gives one player a BYE with a point each round. The 5-round plan stays the same.

FreeThe tournament app

The app instead of arbiter software

Pairings are computed by bbpPairings, an open-source engine implementing the Dutch system by FIDE rules: score groups, floats on an odd field, colour alternation. Free to use.

  1. 1The event is created in the app in a minute
  2. 2Players register themselves through the link
  3. 3The engine pairs every round, not the organizer
  4. 4The finished tournament exports as a TRF file that arbiter software accepts
  • Swiss system. proper rounds with correct pairings, not random matchups
  • Round robin. a full circle, with the round count derived from the field
  • Free meetup. a light format with no tournament machinery

More than a bot: the app, FIDE rules and a TRF report

  • The app. Besides the bot there is an app - inside Telegram and simply at vibechess.ru/app: what is on in your city, the player list, a live table, the current round, your profile and game history - everything that is awkward to read as chat messages.
  • Pairings by FIDE rules. Pairings are computed by bbpPairings, an open-source engine implementing the Dutch system: score groups, floats on an odd field, colour alternation, no rematches and no two byes in a row.
  • A TRF report. A finished tournament exports as a single file in the FIDE data exchange format - the one arbiter software and federations accept. Your profile stores the FIDE ID, national federation code, title, sex and date of birth for it.
  • Free. All of the above, with no subscriptions, paid plans or limits on the number of tournaments and players.

Missing a feature? Message the developers

The bot is constantly improved based on real tournaments. If you need a feature that isn't there yet, message the developers right inside the bot with the /support command. Many features appeared exactly because organizers asked for them, and useful ideas get added quickly.

At the board since childhood: hazy about his rating, precise about every rook he has blundered. Counts an evening as a good one if the opponent stayed to talk afterwards instead of rushing off to check with an engine. Message →
